Summary
Systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies (2011-2023) identifying risk factors for poor outcomes in children hospitalised with virus-associated acute lower respiratory infection, including supplemental oxygen use, mechanical ventilation, intensive care admission, prolonged stay and death. Meta-analysis was feasible only for RSV-related ALRI, where comorbidities such as neurological disease, Down's syndrome, chronic lung disease, immunocompromise, prematurity and congenital heart disease were associated with increased odds of poor outcome. Relevant to PICU teams triaging and anticipating escalation needs in infants and children with viral respiratory infection, and to prophylaxis and management guideline development.
