Summary
A systematic review and meta-analysis of seven multicentre randomised controlled trials examining exogenous pulmonary surfactant therapy in children aged one month to 18 years with acute lung injury or paediatric ARDS. Outcomes assessed included mortality, ventilator-free days, duration of mechanical ventilation, adverse events and oxygenation index. The authors report associations favouring surfactant for mortality, ventilator-free days and adverse events, with no significant difference in ventilation duration or oxygenation index. The authors conclude the clinical impact remains uncertain and requires further study.
