Summary

A systematic review of ketogenic diet therapy (KDT) in children with super-refractory status epilepticus, combined with a case series of eight children treated at a UK tertiary children's hospital. Across 147 pooled cases, nearly all achieved ketosis and around 60% had resolution of SRSE, though concomitant and subsequent treatments make causal attribution difficult. Adverse effects were mostly gastrointestinal, with serious metabolic events (acidosis, hypoglycaemia, raised amylase) reported in a minority. The authors conclude KDT appears feasible and reasonably safe, and may warrant early consideration in this group.
