Summary
A systematic review of 16 published articles describing 27 paediatric cases of Candida thrombophlebitis, plus one new case. It outlines clinical features, risk factors (notably central venous catheters, broad-spectrum antibiotics, ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, parenteral nutrition and prematurity), and the antifungal and anticoagulant strategies reported. Candida albicans was the commonest species and fever the commonest presenting feature, with surgical resection considered in persistent illness. Relevant to PICU teams managing central venous access and suspected fungal line-associated infection.
