Summary
This systematic review and meta-analysis compares outcomes for injured children (aged 19 years or under) managed at paediatric trauma centres versus adult, combined or non-designated hospitals. Across 56 studies, paediatric trauma centres were associated with lower odds of mortality, CT use and operative management of blunt solid organ injury compared with adult centres, with weaker associations versus combined centres and for older children. Certainty of evidence was rated very low owing to selection and confounding bias. Useful for PICU teams considering regionalisation and triage of paediatric major trauma.
