Summary
A prospective randomised trial of 100 intubated children transported from theatre to PICU after cardiac surgery, comparing manual bag ventilation with transport mechanical ventilation. Outcomes included end-tidal CO2, oxygen saturation, heart rate, blood pressures, airway pressures and arterial blood gases before and after transfer. Hand ventilation was associated with greater variation in gas exchange and haemodynamic parameters, with no adverse events in either group. The authors favour mechanical ventilation for intra-hospital transport of post-operative paediatric cardiac patients.
