Summary

Phase I randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of oral/enteral N-acetylcysteine plus probenecid in 14 children aged 2-18 years admitted to PICU with severe traumatic brain injury and an externalised ventricular drain. Serum and CSF drug concentrations were measured to confirm CNS penetration, and safety was the primary focus. No adverse events were attributed to the drug combination, and physiological measures, ICP-directed therapy use, injury biomarkers and 3-month Glasgow Outcome Scale did not differ between groups. Of interest to PICU clinicians as early-phase neuroprotection research rather than practice guidance.
