Summary
Double-blind randomised equivalence trial in 615 infants aged 6 weeks to 12 months admitted to eight UK paediatric units with viral bronchiolitis, comparing oxygen supplementation targeted to SpO2 of 90% or higher versus 94% or higher using standard or modified oximeters. Time to resolution of cough was equivalent between groups, with no significant difference in serious adverse events, high-dependency transfers or readmissions. The authors conclude a permissive target of 90% or higher is as safe and clinically effective as a normoxic target, and call for similar work in older children and resource-limited settings. Relevant to PICU and HDU staff managing oxygen therapy and escalation decisions in bronchiolitis.
