Summary

A pragmatic randomised controlled trial in a Colombian PICU comparing as-needed with routine endotracheal suctioning in 90 ventilated children. The composite primary outcome comprised hypoxaemia, arrhythmias, accidental extubation and cardiac arrest, with secondary outcomes of ventilation days, PICU stay, ventilator-associated pneumonia and mortality. No differences were found between the two suctioning protocols. Relevant to nursing and physiotherapy airway care practice in ventilated PICU patients.
