Summary

Systematic review and meta-analysis of 16 randomised trials comparing combined oral sucrose plus nonnutritive sucking with single interventions (nonnutritive sucking, sucrose, breast milk or glucose) for procedural pain in infants, largely in neonatal intensive care. The combination reduced pain scores more than either component alone, with no clear difference from breast milk, and adverse events were assessed qualitatively. The authors note the benefit may be limited for moderate-to-severe pain. Relevant to neonatal and paediatric staff performing painful procedures.
