Summary

A small randomised controlled trial in 20 extremely low birth weight infants comparing an automated oxygen delivery algorithm (Auto-Mixer) with manual FiO2 adjustment over 12 hours in babies on supplemental oxygen without mechanical ventilation. Outcomes were time within a target SpO2 range, SpO2 variability, time with SpO2 above 95%, oxygen delivered and number of manual interventions. Automated control increased time within target range, reduced hyperoxaemia and eliminated manual adjustments. Relevant to neonatal units and to wider interest in closed-loop oxygen titration in paediatric critical care.
