Summary

Systematic review and meta-analysis of 23 quantitative studies (1,299 caregivers) examining quality of life and caregiver burden among family carers of children with a tracheostomy. Pooled family impact, parental health-related QOL and family functioning scores were derived from studies using the PedsQL Family Impact Module, with other data from tracheostomy-specific and Zarit Burden instruments. Risk factors for poorer outcomes included child comorbidities, younger age at tracheostomy, extra medical equipment, financial strain, sole or unmarried caregiver status and maternal depression, while some parents described positive family growth. The authors suggest routine assessment of caregiver QOL to identify those needing coping and stress-reduction support, relevant to PICU teams preparing families for home tracheostomy care.
