Summary
A pilot pre-post study in two Australian PICUs implementing locally developed sedation and analgesia management guidelines, including an algorithm and assessment tools, for ventilated children. Outcomes included ventilation duration, sedative dose and duration, length of stay, plus feasibility measures such as recruitment, guideline adherence via chart audit and staff acceptability. Morphine infusion duration and maximum doses were lower after implementation, with no apparent change in ventilation duration or length of stay, and staff viewed the guidelines positively. Useful for PICU teams considering protocolised sedation assessment and its implementation challenges.
