Summary

This systematic review and meta-analysis pools ten paediatric cohort studies examining long-term outcomes following an episode of acute kidney injury in children. Outcomes assessed included proteinuria, hypertension, reduced glomerular filtration rate and mortality, with a mean follow-up of about 6.5 years. The authors report substantial heterogeneity in AKI definitions, study quality and outcome reporting, and no study included a non-AKI comparator group. The findings suggest children who survive AKI may warrant longer-term renal follow-up, though prospective controlled studies are needed.
