Summary
Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised trials of high flow nasal cannula oxygen in infants and children up to 24 months with bronchiolitis in acute hospital settings. Fifteen of 23 eligible studies were pooled, comparing HFNC with standard oxygen therapy and with CPAP for treatment failure and adverse events. HFNC was associated with lower treatment failure than standard oxygen, with no significant difference versus CPAP and no significant excess of adverse outcomes. Relevant to escalation decisions for bronchiolitis in emergency, ward and PICU settings.
