Summary
Multicentre randomised controlled trial in three Dutch PICUs comparing daily sedation interruption added to protocolised sedation versus protocolised sedation alone in mechanically ventilated children needing sedatives. The primary outcome was ventilator-free days at day 28, with ICU and hospital length of stay and cumulative midazolam dose as further outcomes. The trial stopped early for slow recruitment and found no difference in ventilator-free days or length of stay, while 30-day mortality was higher in the interruption group without an established causal link. Relevant to PICU teams designing sedation protocols and weaning practice.
