Summary

This systematic review and meta-analysis pooled 24 studies (nearly 2000 children) comparing serum and urinary cystatin C as predictive biomarkers for acute kidney injury. Analyses were stratified by sample type and reported standardised mean differences and prognostic performance characteristics. The authors conclude cystatin C has acceptable prognostic value for paediatric AKI, with serum levels rising early after admission. Relevant to PICU clinicians considering early biomarkers for AKI detection alongside traditional measures.
