Summary

A double-blind randomised controlled trial in a single level IV neonatal unit comparing a mixed lipid emulsion (soybean oil, MCT, olive oil, fish oil) with a soybean oil-based emulsion for parenteral nutrition in 230 extremely low birth weight infants. The primary outcome was parenteral nutrition associated cholestasis defined by consecutive raised conjugated bilirubin measurements. No statistically significant reduction in cholestasis or other neonatal morbidity was found with the mixed lipid emulsion. Of interest to PICU and neonatal teams managing long-term parenteral nutrition and hepatic complications.
