Management of asthma exacerbations in the paediatric population: a systematic review.

Summary
This systematic review appraises 16 clinical practice guidelines published 2009-2019 on the diagnosis and treatment of paediatric asthma exacerbations. While definitions of exacerbation were broadly consistent, the authors found marked variation in severity grading and assessment of asthma control, and few guidelines addressed criteria for hospitalisation or discharge. Many guidelines scored poorly for stakeholder involvement and editorial independence. Relevant to PICU and emergency staff managing acute severe asthma, highlighting inconsistency between guidance and practice.
