Summary

Systematic review and meta-analysis of 23 studies examining outcomes of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in neonates and children with sepsis and refractory septic shock. Pooled survival to discharge was around 59%, with higher survival reported in neonates and in those supported with venoarterial ECMO. Secondary outcomes included length of hospital and intensive care stay, ECMO duration, causative organisms and complications. Supports consideration of ECMO as salvage therapy in refractory paediatric septic shock, acknowledging study limitations and heterogeneity.
