Summary
A prospective randomised study of perioperative intravenous sildenafil in children with ventricular septal defects and pulmonary hypertension undergoing corrective cardiac surgery. Outcomes compared included oxygenation (PaO2/FiO2), pulmonary-to-systemic arterial pressure ratio, time to extubation and postoperative intensive care length of stay. The authors report improvements in oxygenation and pressure ratios with shorter extubation times and ICU stay in the sildenafil group. Relevant to PICU teams managing postoperative pulmonary hypertension after congenital heart surgery, though a small single-centre trial.
