Summary
This US cohort study used interrupted time-series analysis of the Pediatric Health Information Systems database to examine use of non-recommended tests (chest radiography, viral testing, full blood count) and treatments (bronchodilators, corticosteroids, antibiotics) in children under two with bronchiolitis before and after the 2014 AAP guideline update. Use of most non-recommended services declined continuously from 2006, with the steepest change seen for bronchodilators after the 2014 update. Length of stay fell modestly while admission rates were largely unchanged. It is relevant to PICU staff as background on guideline-concordant bronchiolitis care in emergency and inpatient settings rather than critical care specifically.
