Summary
This retrospective single-centre cohort compares the Montreux neonatal ARDS definition with the PALICC-2 paediatric ARDS definition in neonates admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit. Outcomes including morbidity, mortality, severity, therapies and prognosis were similar between definitions for neonates diagnosed beyond the first week of life, but differed for those diagnosed within the perinatal period. The authors argue the perinatal period has distinct triggers, epidemiology and clinical course and should be accounted for when defining neonatal ARDS. Useful background for PICU staff applying PALICC-2 criteria to young infants.
